This workshop will bring together observationalists and modellers in a practical workshop to advance our understanding of the Twilight Zone by making best use of extensive current international activity. Participating projects already confirmed include EXPORTS (US), Ocean Twilight Zone (US), FLUXES (Spain), COMICS (UK), GOCART (UK), CUSTARD (UK), PICCOLO (UK) and developing programmes in France and Germany.


Ten places are available for early career scientists from outside the major projects to attend. Limited funds are available to assist attendance.

Conference Programme 


The workshop is intended as a practical event rather than as a platform for presenting finished work.

It will focus on discussing how we make best use of the ongoing and future activities by identifying gaps in sampling, consistency of methodology, innovative approaches and pooling of data.

More specific themes of the workshop will be...


   - Surface influences on Twilight Zone function

   - Carbon pathways through the Twilight Zone

   - Controls on remineralisation depth

   - New techniques and technologies (this could include AUVs, genomics, imaging, new sensors etc)
